Philosophy Engineering and National Development

2. Why Philosophy in Engineering?

Philosophy plays a crucial role in Engineering as an ever developing field and should be considered extensively by the engineering community where it isn’t yet. Because engineering practice is heuristic in nature, philosophical thinking, including reflection, is an important way to improve engineering judgment. This paper examines a wide range of sources in order to provide the reader with a starting point when considering philosophy in engineering and national development.

Among the topics covered are how education of philosophy affects engineering practice, how designers of non-prototypical engineered systems deal with significant uncertainty, and how philosophy fit within an overall notion of engineering quality for national development. The citations in this paper are not exhaustive of all literary works on philosophy and the impacts in engineering, but they are a substantial works that should make the reader to begin digging deeper into the related literature and go as profoundly or as expansively as intended from there.
